About Dirt Giant

Let me tell you something about driveways - they're a lot like people. Each one has its own story to tell, if you know how to listen. I'm Drew Perry, owner of Dirt Giant, and I've spent the last 18 years learning the language of gravel driveways across Middle Tennessee.

What started as a necessity has grown into something I truly love doing. Every day, I'm out there making sure folks in Columbia and the surrounding areas have driveways that actually last, instead of washing away with the next big rain.

The Dirt Giant Story

You know what they say about necessity being the mother of invention? Well, back in 2008, that hit pretty close to home. The economy had taken a nosedive, and I was standing on a piece of land I couldn't sell, looking at a future I couldn't figure out. I'd sold everything I could think of to keep from going under - guns, equipment, you name it.

That's when it hit me. I kicked at the ground in frustration and thought, "Well, all I've got left is this dirt. Guess I'll sell dirt." Started with a beat-up dump truck I bought for $480 (had to talk the guy down from $500 because that's literally all I had). That old truck didn't even have working brakes on the back - had to use vice grips to get it home.

But here's where it gets interesting. People started asking, "Hey, can you make this flat?" Sure, I grew up on a farm - I knew my way around a tractor. So I borrowed my dad's old farm tractor, brought out a box blade, and got to work. That was the beginning.

  • Learning the Hard Way

Now, I'll tell you straight - those first eight years were really about learning what not to do. I made every mistake you could make with a gravel driveway. But each mistake taught me something important about how water moves across our Middle Tennessee terrain.

The real turning point came when I realized something that changed everything: a perfectly flat driveway is actually a problem waiting to happen. That's when I started understanding that driveways need to be crowned - shaped like a turtle's back - so water runs off instead of down. It sounds simple now, but that revelation changed everything about how I approach driveway installation and repair.

  • Growing Into Expertise

These days, I can usually tell what a driveway needs before I even step out of my truck. That's not showing off - it's just what happens when you've solved the same problems hundreds of times in our local conditions. Every job taught me something new, and now I'm putting all that knowledge to work for folks across Middle Tennessee.

What Makes Us Different

Here's something most folks don't know about Dirt Giant - it's just me, Drew Perry, on every job. I actually built my company backwards from what most people do. Instead of growing bigger with crews and multiple jobs running at once, I chose to stay small and focused. Why? Because I learned that the only way to guarantee quality is to do the work myself.

When you hire Dirt Giant, you're not getting a crew that's rushing to get to the next job. You're getting my full attention, my years of experience, and my commitment to doing things right. When I'm on your property, your driveway is the only thing I'm thinking about.

Personal Attention That Makes a Difference

I'll tell you straight - when I'm working on your driveway, my phone's on permanent "do not disturb." That's not because I'm being rude. It's because I believe every driveway deserves my complete focus. After all, if someone's trusting me with their property, they deserve nothing less than my best work.

Our Approach to Driveways

Let me tell you how I look at driveways - it's probably different from what you're used to hearing. Most contractors see a driveway as just a path from point A to point B. I see it as a puzzle that needs solving. Every property tells a story about how water moves across it, and understanding that story is the key to building a driveway that lasts.

Reading the Land

Before I even think about bringing in gravel, I'm looking at:

  • Where water comes from uphill
  • How many acres are draining toward your driveway
  • Where that water needs to go
  • What the soil's telling me about drainage
  • How your property's natural slopes affect water flow

You might think I'm being overly careful, but here's the truth: in Middle Tennessee, water management isn't just important - it's everything. I've seen too many driveways fail because someone didn't take the time to understand these basics.

Building It Right

There's a saying I like to use: "You can either pay once to do it right, or pay multiple times to fix it." Every driveway I build gets:

  • Proper crowning that sheds water like a turtle's back
  • Strategic drainage that works with your property's natural flow
  • The right materials in the right places
  • Attention to detail that prevents future problems

I'm not interested in quick fixes or temporary solutions. When I build or repair a driveway, I'm thinking about how it's going to handle the next five years of Tennessee weather, not just the next five months.

  • A gravel driveway leading to a house on a sunny day.

Why Choose Dirt Giant?

Listen, I'm going to be straight with you - I'm not the cheapest option out there. If you're looking for someone to just dump some gravel and spread it flat, that's not me. But if you want someone who understands Middle Tennessee driveways inside and out, who's learned from every mistake possible (so you don't have to), and who treats your property like it's their own - well, that's where I come in.

  • Experience That Matters

Here's what 18 years in the business has taught me:

    • Every driveway tells a story about where water wants to go
    • Cheap fixes end up costing more in the long run
    • There's no substitute for doing it right the first time
    • Local knowledge makes all the difference

I've seen driveways I've installed last seven years or more without major repairs. Why? Because we took the time to understand the property and do the job right from the start.

Areas We Serve

From the rolling hills around Spring Hill to the farmland near Culleoka, I've worked on just about every type of terrain Middle Tennessee can throw at you. Each area has its own challenges, and I've learned what works (and what doesn't) in each one.

Our service area includes:

But here's what matters: no matter where you are in our service area, you get the same attention to detail and commitment to quality. I know these roads, these hills, and these challenges because this is my home too..

Ready to Get Your Driveway Done Right?

If you're tired of watching your gravel wash away every time it rains, or if you're planning a new driveway and want it done right from the start, let's talk. At Dirt Giant, we don't just install driveways - we solve problems.

Remember what I always say: The cheapest quote rarely leads to the best driveway. But when you choose Dirt Giant, you're choosing a driveway that's built to handle everything Middle Tennessee can throw at it.

A Final Word from Drew

I love what I do. When I'm out there shaping a driveway just right, making sure every angle and slope is perfect - that's when I'm happiest. And I believe that passion for quality shows in every job we complete. Because at the end of the day, it's not just about building driveways - it's about solving problems and helping neighbors.
